How to Own an AR-15 or AK Style Rifle in CA

Ever wanted to own an AR-15 or AK-47 in CA. Well here is what you need to know.

CA does not have an assault weapons ban. However they do ban the transfer of any weapons that they consider an assault weapon. So, what does CA consider an assault weapon. Well according to CA penal code 12776.1 any semi-automatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and has any one of the following features would be considered an assault weapon. Those features are:
  1. A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
  2. A thumbhole stock.
  3. A folding or telescoping stock.
  4. A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
  5. A flash suppressor.
  6. A forward pistol grip.
So how can you own an AR-15 or AK style rifle. Really this applies to several styles of rifles, AR-15's and AK's are just the most popular. Well, you have two choices. Configure your rifle so that it has none of the evil features, or use a "Bullet Button". What is a "Bullet Button"? Well, it is a little accessory that basically makes the use of a tool to remove a magazine a necessity, thus making your rifle have what is considered a fixed magazine. If your rifle has a fixed magazine it can have "evil features" and not be considered an assault rifle.

I have attached the Rifle Flow chart from CalGuns here for a more detailed explanation.

And here is a memo that was distributed with in the Sacramento Police Department.
